La Grande, Oregon - Shirley Bernice Rogers was born October 30, 1943 in Menahga, Minnesota to Charles and Hazel (Pettit) Olson. She was the fifth child of eight. Shirley moved to Priest River, Idaho, where she attended school until the third grade. The family moved to Nordman, Idaho right before she started fourth grade. Shirley and her sisters rode the bus thirty-eight miles one way to attend Priest River High School. In high school, she became friends with Sherry Rogers and fell in love with Sherry's older brother, Jim.

Jim and Shirley got married in July of 1963 in Oroville, California. They welcomed a daughter, Lisa, in 1964. They moved to La Grande, Oregon right before Lisa's first birthday. They made La Grande their permanent home.

Shirley worked in retail for a few years before becoming a homemaker. When Lisa graduated from high school, Shirley started traveling and working construction alongside of Jim. They lived in a thirty-five foot fifth wheel and worked together every day, that's real love.

Jim and Shirley both retired in 2002. They enjoyed watching their grandsons play baseball and basketball. It's hard to talk about one of them without talking about the other because they were always together. Jim and Shirley were avid outdoor people. They enjoyed hunting, fishing, and snowmobiling, riding four wheelers, boating and camping.

Jim passed away in September of 2006. Shirley busied herself with her family, friends and church activities. Shirley went to be with the Lord and Jim on May, 15, 2026.

Shirley is survived by her daughter, Lisa (Rogers) Workinger (Brad) of La Grande, Oregon; grandsons, Taylor Workinger (Shelby), Mitch Workinger of La Grande, and Jake Workinger (Josie) of Pendleton, Oregon; sisters, Wanda Mullaley (Tim), Carol Naccarato, Charlotte Cary (Allen), Phyllis Cary (Clyde), Sherry Renton (Bill), Robin Kreager (Kip), Laurie Kreager (Mike) and numerous nieces and nephews. Shirley was preceded in death by her husband Jim; her parents, Charles and Hazel Olson; brother, Bob Barnett; sisters, Lucille Sutterlin and Rose Johnson.

A celebration of Shirley's life will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in La Grande, OR on Friday June 5, 2026 at 10:00 with a light luncheon to follow at the Presbyterian Friendship Center. Casual dress is preferred by the family. A second celebration of life for Shirley will be held in Priest River, Idaho at a later date.
