Joeseph, Oregon - Marion Eleanor [Hartzberg] Indihar died on July 21, 2026, at an adult family home in Redmond, WA. Marion was born on a farmstead in northern Minnesota [near Aitken] on August 5, 1928, the 7th of 9 children born to Karin and Ive Hartzberg, immigrants from Sweden. She died peacefully just 2 weeks shy of her 98th birthday.

Marion obtained her nursing degree from The College of St. Scholastica in Duluth. While there, she met a young intern, John Edward Indihar, whom she wed in 1951. They had an adventurous honeymoon canoeing in the Boundary Waters of Minnesota. They welcomed two daughters in the following years, Deborah Ann and Mary Beth.

Marion and John settled in La Grande, Oregon in 1960, where John was a radiologist, and later, Marion practiced nursing in several capacities. She worked in several assisted living homes in Union and Wallowa Counties and served in a leadership role at the Union County Public Health Department for several years. The whole family was delighted to welcome Julie Anne in the early 70's. During those years, John, Marion and the girls spent time at their property on Wallowa Lake, Oregon, where they eventually built a cabin in 1973 that the family still enjoys today.

Known as a 'pioneer woman' to her family, she enjoyed quilting, knitting, gardening, chopping her own firewood, trying out new recipes, and was a baking and jam-making fiend. If you knew Marion, you may have received a jar of jam, a quick bread, or cookies that she made. She loved to drive [fast] and was fiercely independent. She was immensely proud of her Swedish heritage. Her brother called her 'a stubborn Swede' - and he was not wrong!

After John's death in August 1998, Marion lived for a time at her cabin on the lake, then moved back to her roots in Minnesota to be near family. In 2016, she built a house in Joseph, OR and came back there to live closer to her daughters and friends. In 2024, she moved to Redmond, WA, where she lived for the remainder of her life.

Marion was happiest when she was helping others, always willing to lend a helping hand. She was a member of PEO, the 'Westsiders', quilting groups, and her coffee group. She helped to found one of the first Women's Investor's Club in La Grande. A longtime member of the Catholic Church, she served in the Altar Society at Our Lady of the Valley in La Grande and was a faithful member of St. Katherine's Church in Enterprise for many years.

Marion is survived by her daughters, Deborah of Portland, Mary Beth Cecil [Brad] of Bellingham, WA, and Julie Barclay [Micah] of Redmond, WA. Also survived by 4 grandchildren, Jocelyn Cecil [Jay Blackinton], Geoffrey Cecil, Arielle O'Neill [Brendan] and Finn Barclay; plus 2 great-grandchildren, Atticus and Miette Vaughn. Her husband, John, preceded her in 1998. She was the sole remaining sibling of her family.

Marion's Funeral Mass will be held at St. Katherine's Catholic Church, 301 East NE Garfield St, Enterprise, OR, 97828, on Friday, Aug. 14th, at 11:30, followed by a graveside interment at the Joseph Cemetery with reception after, at the Parish Hall.
