Wallowa County, Oregon - On Wednesday, October 29, 2025, Dan suffered a sudden cardiac event while driving his UTV on his beloved Divide timber property. The medical examiner determined that he had passed away before the UTV struck two trees and he was ejected from the vehicle.
Early reports of the accident that appeared on social media were not correct, and our family wanted to offer this clarification. We also extend our apologies to close friends and extended family who were not personally contacted before the news became public.
Dan spent over thirty years caring for and working on his property thinning, planting trees, and logging alongside his good friend, Bill Neiman, and later with his son-in-law, Jim Adams. He dedicated his life to stewardship of the land he loved.
Dan proudly served three years in the U.S. Army (1956-1959). After retiring from the U.S. Forest Service, he took great pride in raising high-quality Timothy hay for export. He was a hardworking man with a strong will, always with a project on his list and something to look forward to.
He leaves behind his loving wife of 66 years, Joyce; his daughters, Dana Gover and Jodi Gover-Adams and her husband, Jim Adams; his grandson, Justin Gover, and wife, Jessie; his
granddaughter, Hailie Hillock, and husband, Jared; and six great-grandchildren whom he loved dearly and eagerly awaited visits from.
Dan will be deeply missed, but his legacy of love, stewardship, and strength will live on in his family and on the land he cherished.
At Dan's request, no formal service will be held. Those wishing to honor his memory are encouraged to donate to a charity of their choice or spend time outdoors doing something he loved. Coles Tribute Center is in charge of cremation arrangements.
